During the 1920s, Morgan made numerous etchings of boats. Several of these show the influence of James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Morgan’s mentor, Joseph Pennell, was a close friend of Whistler’s and his first biographer. Morgan rendered both the water and sky with very little ink, just enough to suggest a ripple in the water or wispy clouds in the sky, which stands in contrast to the dark ships.
