Während des Ersten Weltkriegs war Heinrich Vogeler, Jungestilmaler und Gründer des Worpsweder Barkenhoffs, als Nachrichtenoffizier an der Ostfront stationiert. Im August 1915 gelangte er während seines Einsatzes auch nach Dolina, einem Ort in den Vorkarpaten, der heute zum westlichen Teil der Ukraine gehört und fertigte einige farbige Detailstudien der galizischen Bevölkerung an. In dem Mappenwerk „Aus dem Osten“ veröffentlichte Vogeler seine Eindrücke bereits 1916.
