Very popular among Europeans as well as Indian audiences in the Subcontinent for its Indianness as well as grace and lyricism, Preparing for Puja depicts a Maratha lady dressed in a traditional red sari with a copper water vessel at the village well, drawing water for her religious and household duties. Her graceful pose and pious behaviour – both requisites of the feminine ideal of the time – enhance her beauty. Her arm guides the eye directly to the shiny pot, a symbol of the impending puja as well as of fertility. A closer look reveals her unabashed look at the viewer, not only questioning the intrusion but also ascertaining her character which clearly contrasts with the conventional subdued image of traditional woman. Trindade progressive mind and convictions are clearly stated in this scene. Among his collection of portraits of women there is always a feeling of equality between artist and sitter, independently of the latter’s social condition or environment in which they are represented in. In his paintings there is no subjugation or infantilization and definitely no moral high ground.Trindade’s attachment to academic conventions is manifested in the triangular composition of the pose. The playoff light flickering within the cool early morning shadows reveals the artist’s interest in the Impressionism movement. The use of a vibrant and contemporary palette of reds contrasting with the green foliage, set against a neutral wall is also indicative of late 19th century concerns in colour theory.References: Shihandi, Marcella, et al, António Xavier Trindade: An Indian Painter from Portuguese Goa (exhibition catalogue), Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia, 1996.
