Granet made numerous sketches of Monte Mario from the Pincian Hill, the site of the Villa Medici, which became the seat of the French Academy in Rome in 1803. This example was painted during the brief period after sunset when sufficient daylight remains to perceive color, and could have been completed in as little as twenty minutes. Almost all the artist’s oil studies are in the Musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence; this one was inherited by his pupil Baptistin Martin (1818–1901) and descended in his family.
