This elevation of the main façade of the University of Coimbra Astronomy Observatory bears the signature of the Marquês de Pombal, signifying that the construction was authorized. The drawing, although unsigned was, almost certainly, the work of W. Elsden who was responsible for the Construction Office. The Neo-Classical lines also permit recognition of his work. Due to the scientific challenges involved, the building for the Observatory received the largest number of projects and was intended to be part of the recently created Mathematics Faculty, a school founded as part of the Educational Reform. Even though the execution of this version of the project, which made use of the quadrangular medieval tower of the castle, was approved only the ground level was built following a decision that the location would not permit a good observation of the stars. The building fell into ruins and was finally destroyed to make way for the projects of the Salazar government in the mid-20th century.
