From 1833, Schinkel oversaw the design of the palace being constructed on the Babelsberg hill in Potsdam, originally envisaged as a small summer residence for Prince Wilhelm. Princess Augusta’s penchant for Neo-Gothic architecture likely played an influential role in his design. This picture shows the window walls of the princess’s entrance hall, living room, and drawing room on the first floor of the palace (compare with the design for the dining room window wall, inv. SM 51.34). The completed building differed from the original design in several ways. Schinkel’s architectural concept was further modified with the subsequent extensions designed by Ludwig Persius and Johann Heinrich Strack.
