This picture, showing Christ and his apostles beneath an arcade tooled into the gold background, is from the base (predella) of an unidentified altarpiece. The apostles are recognizable by their attributes, for example Saints Peter with the keys of heaven and James with his pilgrim’s staff. When this work was painted, Taddeo di Bartolo was perhaps the most highly regarded Tuscan artist in Italy and had commissions from as far afield as Padua, Genoa, and Pisa. In his native Siena he was the preferred artist of the government, notably decorating their chapel in the Palazzo Pubblico, the city’s town hall.
