Traditionally a seat has been connected with the status of its user. The master of the house had his chair, and by taking his place in it he proclaimed his ownership of the house. Inventories of 17th-century houses speak of a single 'man's chair', meaning the principal one. The particular chair shown in the picture is among the most stately and costly Dutch 'man's chairs' to have survived from the early 17th century.
