Size and Media

Caravaggio's Ecce Homo is an oil on canvas painting measuring 128 x 103 cm. This masterpiece showcases the artist's exceptional skill in using chiaroscuro, a technique that involves the use of strong contrasts between light and dark to create depth and volume.

Date and Location

Ecce Homo was painted around 1605/06 or 1609, according to John Gash. The painting is currently housed in the Palazzo Bianco, Genoa, Italy.

History

According to Giambatista Cardi, nephew of the Florentine artist Cigoli, Cardinal Massimo Massimi commissioned paintings on the theme of Ecce Homo from three artists, Cigoli, Caravaggio, and Domenico Passignano, without informing the artists of the multiple commissions. The Caravaggio version was reported by near contemporaries to have been taken to Spain.

The Controversy

The attribution of Ecce Homo to Caravaggio is debated among scholars. However, most agree that it showcases the artist's mature Roman-period style, with forms visible close-up and modelled by dramatic light.
