Although bearing neither a signature nor a seal, this painted fan can be attributed to the ukiyo-e painter and printmaker Katsushika Isai. In this delicate depiction of the flora and fauna of summer, Isai displays not only his dexterity in handling different subjects but also his familiarity with the paintings and elaborately decorated ceramics of Qing China, which must have inspired him.
