In questa immagine di battaglia, mostrata nel Salon del 1879, Détaille raffigura un incidente che aveva osservato il 2 dicembre 1870, durante la guerra franco-prussiana. I soldati del generale Faron si mostrano fortificando la loro nuova posizione nella città di Champigny-sur-Marne, vicino a Parigi, e rompendo le aperture nella parete per cannoni. Il generale Faron è a sinistra, parlando con un vecchio giardiniere. L'artista dipinse una replica dell'immagine nel 1879 (collezione privata) e tornò al soggetto per un enorme panorama della battaglia (ora distrutta) che eseguì con de Neuville nel 1882.
