Nato a Üsküdar, Istanbul, Şeker Ahmed Paşa è stato un membro leader del gruppo di pittori militari. Ha iniziato i suoi studi nel 1855 al Medical College, ma nel 1856 ha lasciato per iscriversi all'Accademia Militare. Mentre era ancora uno studente, lavorava come assistente insegnante di arte. Nel 1864 il sultano Abdülaziz gli concesse una borsa di studio per studiare l'arte a Parigi. Nel 1870 studiò sotto i pittori Gustave Boulanger e Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). I suoi dipinti furono esposti al Salone di Parigi nel 1869 e nel 1870. Nel 1871 tornò a Istanbul, dove fu nominato per insegnare alla Sultanahmet School of Art, e insegnò anche in varie scuole militari. Si alzò al rango di capitano e cominciò a insegnare arte al Medical College. Nel 1873 organizzò la Turchia
