Janssen si unì ai pittori" gilda ad Anversa nel 1601, subito dopo il ritorno da alcuni anni di studio a Roma. Dal 1606 al 1612 lavorò in modo fortemente Caravaggesco; questa tela è un tipico esempio di circa 1610. Il soggetto, a volte descritto come un "angel pietà", può essere tracciato a prototipi bizantini ma è stato popolare con i recenti artisti nord italiani come Tintoretto. La tela è stata probabilmente commissionata come pala d'altare, e la sua somiglianza con la scultura policroma (una qualità che Rubens ha criticato nella pittura fiamminga contemporanea) gli conferisce un potere iconico favorito dalla Chiesa Controriforma nei Paesi Bassi spagnoli.
