Nel 1834 il giovane pittore francese Prosper Marilhat mostrò una vista su Ezbekiyah Square, Cairo e altre tre scene egizie al Salone di Parigi. Come molti della sua generazione, aveva sentito un inquieto desiderio di viaggiare e si era unito ad una spedizione scientifica guidata da un barone austriaco, Karl von Hugel, nel Vicino Oriente. L'artista doveva morire, folle, di soli trentasei anni, e la sua scena del Cairo sopravvive solo in una stampa.
