Nel 1783 Labille-Guiard divenne uno dei soli quattro pittori donne ammessi alla Royal Academy francese. Una ritrattista leader, ha mostrato oli e pastelli regolarmente al Salone. Era anche un'importante insegnante per la prossima generazione di artisti femminili, come catturata nel suo autoritratto con due allievi, un dipinto di riferimento anche nella collezione The Met. Questo pastello è uno studio per un ritratto più formale di Madame Elisabeth, la sorella minore di Luigi XVI. La famiglia immediata del re, in particolare le sue zie, era protettori chiave e patroni di Labille-Guiard.
