Questa intima e suggestiva vista interiore appartiene ad un gruppo di cinque dipinti in cui Menzel studiò gli effetti della luce in spazi semplicemente arredati che occupava a Berlino tra il 1845 e il 1851. Essi sono del tutto caratteristici del suo occhio incrollabile per i dettagli del quoziente, ma l'artista ha considerato tali esperimenti di opere e non li ha mai esposti. Invece, la sua fama poggiava sulla storicizzazione di costumi e scene trenchant della vita contemporanea nella capitale tedesca.
