Le statuette Lazarus e Cain Slaying Abel possono essere viste ugualmente bene da tutti i lati perché le figure sono torsione - o serpentining - intorno alle loro asce. Tale serpentinata è una caratteristica tipica del manierismo, uno stile cortese che de Vries si adoperò mentre studiava sotto lo scultore Giambologna a Firenze come giovane. In Danimarca, il re Cristiano IV aveva un debole per lo stile manierista sofisticato e distintivo. Sul suolo danese Adrian de Vries è meglio conosciuto per la Fontana di Nettuno (1615-18), commissionata da Christian IV per il Castello di Frederiksborg a Hillerød. Come la fontana, Lazarus e Cain Slaying Abel sono stati creati nella vecchiaia di de Vries. Forse de Vries diede anche a Christian IV le statuette in connessione con la messa in servizio e il pagamento della Fontana di Nettuno.
