Questo ritratto è tra i primi a rappresentare un'attività professionale. Pesare monete d'oro mentre erano vestiti di pelliccia costosa, la sitter potrebbe essere stato uno dei molti mercanti di Bruges che gestivano merci, un cambiavalute, o un banchiere, come Tommaso Portinari (14.40.626). A differenza del ritratto di Memling, la fonte della ricchezza di questo sitter è parte del soggetto, e l’uomo è definito dalla sua professione, non dalla sua pietà. Isenbrant occupò una posizione di rilievo a Bruges, e gestiva un negozio occupato che produceva opere sia per il mercato locale che per il commercio di esportazione.
