La cospirazione di Claudius Civilis era originariamente il più grande dipinto mai realizzato da Rembrandt, a forma di lunetta, o un rettangolo verticale con una cornice rotonda sulla sommità. Il dipinto è stato originariamente commissionato dalla città di Amsterdam per il municipio. Tuttavia, il consiglio di Amsterdam ha respinto il dipinto e l'ha restituito all'artista, ed è ancora sconosciuto se fosse stato o meno pagato per il lavoro. Dopo aver ricevuto il dipinto indietro, Rembrandt ha tagliato la tela fino a un quarto delle sue dimensioni originali, per vendere il dipinto.
