Bierstadt viaggiò in un viaggio prolungato A ovest nell'estate del 1872, che includeva una visita di ritorno nella regione di Yosemite dove prese lo schizzo di Owens Valley, California. Ha catturato il fiume Owens in primo piano con il nuovo scoperto Mount Whitney incombente sullo sfondo. Tasche di neve bianca attraversano la catena montuosa. Nel 1913, la pittoresca acqua del fiume Owens fu deviata a Los Angeles, portando alla distruzione della ricca economia agricola della valle di Owen. Questo conflitto venne chiamato "California Water Wars".
