A partire dal 1880, Ryder si voltò spesso a temi letterari come soggetti per i suoi dipinti. Qui Ryder usa una scena della commedia di Shakespeare, "Come Ti piace", come punto di partenza per la rappresentazione del paesaggio. Le figure sono relegate ad una posizione inesorabile nell'angolo in basso a sinistra della tela. Di solito sono stati identificati come Rosalind (disguizzato in costume maschile) e Celia, che sono scappati dalla corte del duca Federico nella foresta di Arden. Tuttavia, possono ben rappresentare una delle altre coppie di amanti dal gioco. Ryder ha studiato il paesaggio locale del Bronx Park per questo dipinto, semplificando e interpretando forme per creare una visione personale della natura.
