Il dipinto è stato commissionato dai padri Theatine della chiesa di San Vincenzo a Piacenza e rappresenta l'episodio in cui San Carlo Borromeo visita la Lazaret per dare ai malati il comfort dei sacramenti. Riprende l'iconografia di un noto dipinto di Ludovico Carracci, realizzato per l'abbazia di Nonantola.
