Lincoln sedette per questo ritratto e altri quattro nello studio di Alexander Gardner l'8 novembre 1863. La settimana seguente il presidente viaggiò in Pennsylvania per dedicare un nuovo cimitero per i soldati dell'Unione uccisi nella battaglia di Gettysburg.
