L'immagine attuale raffigura le pattuglie militari turche che fanno i loro giri a Smyrna—ora Izmir—che Decamps ha visitato nel 1828. È una variante tardiva del suo primo grande soggetto orientalista, esposto al Salone di Parigi del 1831 (ora nella Collezione Wallace, Londra). Decamps apparteneva alla prima generazione di pittori francesi per diffondere scene di vita quotidiana ambientate in Medio Oriente. Questo dipinto apparteneva al primo presidente del Metropolitan Museum, John Taylor Johnston, fino al 1876, quando fu acquistato da Catharine Lorillard Wolfe, il primo benefattore donna del Museo.
