Capitano di ingegneria militare nell'esercito di Metz nel 1870, si oppone alla resa della città poi circondato, e presenta invano a Bazaine un rapporto che dimostra la vulnerabilità dell'esercito prussiano. Lascia la città assediata per unirsi al governo della Difesa Nazionale a Tours, e propone una manovra che permette di allontanare il nemico lontano dalle sue basi, questo è stato respinto. Partigiano della guerra all'estremo, offrì i suoi servizi alla Comune di Parigi il 19 marzo 1871 e fu nominato
