Nel 1837, l'artista di Baltimora Alfred Jacob Miller viaggiò alla frontiera con la American Fur Company. Lungo la strada, ha fatto molti schizzi di nativi americani, concentrandosi in particolare sul loro rapporto con il commercio della pelliccia. Miller ha commentato il conflitto tra i commercianti e gli Shoshonee:
