Kauffmann è nata in Svizzera ma ha fatto la sua reputazione in Italia e in Inghilterra, dove era membro fondatore della Royal Academy. Questi dipinti di compagni sono stati eseguiti a Roma per monsignor Onorato Caetani, che nello stesso anno aveva il suo ritratto dipinto da Kauffmann. Ritratti successivi di lui di Anton Raphael Mengs e Pompeo Batoni attestano il carattere stretto e internazionale dei circoli intellettuali romani settecenteschi. Kauffmann è stato tra i pittori di storia più ricercati d’Europa. Queste composizioni erano basate su Le avventure di Telemachus di François Fénelon (1699), in cui il figlio dell'eroe greco Odysseus si lava sulle rive di un'isola abitata da Calypso e dalle sue ninfe.
