Dopo aver studiato all'Académie Julian intermittenza dal 1880 al 1888 e lavorato come ritrattista a Boston, Klumpke tornò in Francia nel 1898 per eseguire un ritratto di Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899), l'animale francese che aveva da tempo ammirato. Mostrata al suo cavalletto, Bonheur indossa sulla giacca la sua medaglia dell'Ordine della Legion d'onore. Le due donne divennero compagni a château de By, la casa di Bonheur vicino a Fontainebleau. Dopo la morte di Bonheur, Klumpke ereditò la sua residenza e lo studio e si dedicò alla promozione dell'eredità di Bonheur.
