Venendo a KHARTOUMOn 31 gennaio, il von Hallwyls salire su un treno a Wadi Halfa per viaggiare a Khartoum. Questa fotografia sembra essere stata scattata durante una sosta da qualche parte lungo la strada. Il 2 febbraio, il treno ha percorso i 900 chilometri, e Ida Uhse fornisce una descrizione di Khartoum: “È molto caldo qui. La costruzione dell'hotel è in fase di completamento, e nel tempo sarà un luogo splendido per gli inglesi. Khartoum è sulle rive del Nilo. Fino ad ora, il Mahdi, il temuto dervish, aveva annientato le città e i villaggi che non avrebbero presentato. Ha anche devastato e distrutto la riva nord del Nilo. Il potere dei Mahdi fu terminato dal generale Gordon nella battaglia di Omdurman nel 1885.
