In 1641 il quarto duca di lennox fu creato primo duca di richmond da suo cugino , carlo i. , re d'inghilterra . quattro anni prima aveva sposato mary villiers , figlia del king’s preferito , il duca di buckingham . van dyck probabilmente dipinse questo maestoso ritratto poco dopo Stuart’s investitura nell'ordine della giarrettiera , a novembre 1633 . La stella d'argento , il " lesser george " medaglia su un nastro verde , e la giarrettiera stessa ( sotto il ginocchio sinistro ) sono i order’s insegne . Il levriero suggerisce la nobiltà ( alludendo ai loro privilegi di caccia ) e forse la virtù della fedeltà .
