Questo impressionante ritratto, dipinto circa 1618 quando l'artista aveva diciotto o diciannove anni, è molto vicino in stile ai ritratti contemporanei e poco precedenti di Rubens, per il quale Van Dyck stava lavorando all'epoca. Nella sua insistenza su volume e texture, la stretta attenzione ai dettagli del costume, e la posa e l'espressione passiva, il dipinto aderisce anche ad una vecchia tradizione neterlandese, come si vede nei ritratti di Anthonis Mor (ca. 1516/19-ca. 1575/76).
