Ben noto per i rendering di bestie selvatiche impegnate nella conquista della loro preda, Barye si classifica come l'artista preminente tra i piccoli scultori di bronzo del XIX secolo chiamati "animatori". Il soggetto emotivo e violento e la composizione dinamica, sono tipici dell'era romantica. Barye era noto per visitare zoo parigini per disegnare animali dalla vita. Nel 1859, Barye si trasferì a Barbizon, un villaggio situato ai margini della foresta di Fontainebleau, dove si unì ad altri artisti della scuola Barbizon, tra cui Jean-François Millet e Théodore Rousseau.
