Mauve ha usato toni scuri e linee enfatiche per accentuare la sobria dignità del cowherd mentre muove i suoi animali lentamente attraverso i campi umidi. Ispirato dall'opera dell'artista francese Jean-François Millet, Mauve ha dedicato la sua carriera a rappresentare la campagna olandese e la vita contadina. I suoi dipinti esemplificano l'approccio della scuola dell'Aia, un gruppo di artisti olandesi noti per i colori sottodotti e gli stati d'animo tranquilli delle loro scene rurali.
