Saint Justa e Saint Rufina erano due sorelle umili che vendevano ceramiche nel IV secolo a Siviglia. / Secondo la leggenda, quando la città è stata devastata da un terremoto nel XV secolo le sorelle martiri sono scese dal cielo per tenere la Giralda e impedire che si crollasse. / In quest'opera, Antonio María Esquivel, uno dei più rinomati pittori romantici, presenta una nuova svolta sull'arte religiosa. L'attenzione su un momento di grande tensione drammatica — l'agonia e il passaggio dei Santi — più che il martirio, fornisce uno sguardo dei sottili cambiamenti che si verificavano nella pittura religiosa nella seconda metà del XIX secolo.
