Nato a Niterói nel 1860, Antonio Parreiras fu studente all'Accademia Imperiale di Belle Arti (AIBA), dove ebbe contatti con diversi artisti e pittori che influenzarono il suo lavoro, come Georg Grimm (1846-1887) e Castagneto (1851-1900). La sua prima mostra personale ebbe luogo nel 1885 presso il negozio A Photographia di Rio de Janeiro, subito dopo aver esposto le stesse opere nel suo studio a Niterói. Queste due esperienze hanno aperto la strada a molte mostre personali all'inizio della sua carriera, non solo nello stato di Rio de Janeiro ma anche in altre località. Sentire la necessità di avere accesso alle produzioni di altri paesi, riesce a articolare la vendita del suo lavoro
