Nato in schiavitù a Santo Domingo, Haiti, Pierre Toussaint fu portato a New York nel 1797 da Jean Bérard, un ricco proprietario terriero francese. Quando Bérard tornò ad Haiti e morì improvvisamente, lasciando la sua giovane vedova a New York senza mezzi, Toussaint si prese cura di lei fino alla sua morte. La sostenne così come la sua famiglia diventando uno dei parrucchieri più di successo e alla moda a New York City.
