Era pratica comune per un artista di successo come Van Dyck per impiegare un certo numero di assistenti di studio. Egli stesso aveva iniziato la sua carriera come assistente nello studio di Rubens, e in seguito ha stabilito i suoi laboratori a Anversa e Blackfriars. Charity è solo una delle diverse copie in studio dipinte dopo l'originale di Van Dyck nella National Gallery di Londra. Esso riflette una forte influenza italiana, suggerendo che l’originale fu creato subito dopo il ritorno di Van Dyck dall’Italia nel 1627. Il coinvolgimento di uno studente meno esperto è particolarmente evidente nell'applicazione del colore, che è meno sottile dell'originale.
