Lo stile di Kuindzhi è esemplificato qui dalla composizione minimalista e luce drammatica, colore e nuvole. Il sito è stato identificato come il fiume chiamato Dnipro in ucraino (russo, Dniepr; bielorusso, Dnyapro), che scorre a sud attraverso i tre paesi al Mar Nero. L'artista nacque lungo la costa di Mariupol quando la città ucraina faceva parte dell'Impero russo. Kuindzhi, che era disceso dai Greci Pontici dal Crimea, parlava greco, tataro di Crimea, russo e ucraino, un'abilità che lo serviva bene come si mosse intorno al Mar Nero settentrionale e poi a San Pietroburgo. Lì ha associato con il Peredvizhniki (a volte tradotto come i Wanderers), un gruppo fieristico pionieristico, e in seguito è stato un insegnante influente presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti. Nel marzo 2022, il Kuindzhi Art Museum di Mariupol, Ucraina, è stato distrutto in un aeronautico russo.
