“Credo personalmente nell’arte per l’arte. Nella creazione di un'opera d'arte, nulla dovrebbe interferire con l'idea reale. Un'opera d'arte deve elaborare per propria idea e seguire le condizioni che questa idea stabilisce. Questo non significa che un artista deve avere principi che obbedisce e che svolge in tutte le circostanze. Tali principi sarebbero probabilmente, in generale, esterni e la loro applicazione sarebbe certamente privare un'opera d'arte dalle sue condizioni naturali. C'è forse solo un principio che ogni artista dovrebbe obbedire, cioè: non inchinarsi mai al gusto del mediocre, al gusto di persone minori che preferiscono quello che un artista non farebbe mai.” (Arnold Schönberg, Round-Table on Modern Art, 1949)
