Nel 1874 Artur Heygate Mackmurdo ‘ha viaggiato in Italia con Ruskin’, alcuni scrittori hanno interpretato questo come lui guidato dagli scritti di Ruskin, ma è più probabile che sia stato un assistente di Ruskin durante un lungo viaggio nella zona. Mackmurdo rimase in Italia per due inverni e un'estate tra il 1874 e il 1876. Potrebbe essere stato in questo periodo che si è avventurato in Svizzera per schizzare lo Chalet raffigurato qui. Sui viaggi di ricerca di Ruskin i suoi assistenti sarebbero stati assegnati particolari edifici o opere d'arte per registrare per le pubblicazioni e le conferenze di Ruskin. Mackmurdo sarebbe stato quindi istruito in edifici illustrati e probabilmente utilizzato quelle abilità per eseguire questo studio.
