Nel processo di ricerca di fondi per costruire questo Village Hall per il suo villaggio locale di Great Totham, Maldon, Essex, Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo ha scoperto il lavoro dei Consigli della Comunità Rurale, ed è stato coinvolto nella formazione di un'iniziativa simile per la sua comunità. I CCG hanno cercato di proteggere e nutrire le comunità rurali vicine, in parte fornendo e mantenendo spazi comuni. Questo lavoro è stato una risposta all'accrescimento percepito di sviluppo da città e città vicine. Grande Totham Village Hall è stato costruito c.1909 ed è ancora in uso oggi.
