Una figura piuttosto insensata nella storia del modernismo americano del XX secolo, Arthur Wesley Dow è stato un pittore, stampatore, fotografo e insegnante influente che ha combinato le correnti dell'Estremo Oriente e dell'Ovest per fare arte che era subito pittorica e decorativa. Il suo lavoro, per lo più paesaggi privi di gente, era focalizzato in gran parte su Ipswich, Mass., la città di mare dove è cresciuto e dove per molti anni ha mantenuto una scuola estiva. Le forme piane ma ben bilanciate e colorate dipinse erano distillazioni poetiche piuttosto che rappresentazioni delle rocce, baie, colline, alberi e case di ambienti che conosceva.
