La prova dei pochi studi di olio plein-aria noti di Lucas suggerisce che la sua pratica di dipingere fuori porta si è evoluta da schizzi ravvicinati di dettagli del paesaggio a ampie vedute come questa, il prodotto di un tour del sud Italia in estate e autunno 1832. A differenza della spazzola aperta che si trova qui, i dipinti dello studio di Lucas sono meticolosamente finiti (anche se non meno panoramici), traendo l'influenza di Joseph Anton Koch, il decano della colonia degli artisti tedeschi a Roma.
