L'architetto inglese A.W.N. Pugin ha progettato solo una piccola quantità di gioielli. Questa spilla fa parte di un più grande set (parura) di gioielli in stile gotico e il design si ispira alla decorazione ecclesiastica medievale. Pugin lo ha progettato per la signora che ha proposto di fare la sua terza moglie. Il matrimonio non ebbe luogo, e nel 1848 incontrò e sposò Jane Knill e le diede la parure. Nel 1851 l'intera parure apparve alla Grande Mostra di Londra come parte della Corte Medievale.
