Nel 1872 Henry James descrisse questa immagine come "la prosa perfetta della ritrattistica" . . . in van der Helst" "verità impunita che non si rileva alcun fantest throb di invenzione che sboccia in stile e si straggling attraverso la linea che separa una fine somiglianza da un bel ritratto."
