Le acute capacità osservazionali di Cavarozzi catturano l’intersezione tra arte e scienze naturali, fonte di interesse per l’Accademia fondata dal suo patrono, il nobile romano Giovanni Battista Crescenzi. Un artista contemporaneo registrato là copia "frutti, animali e altre cose bizzarre." Altrove, Cavarozzi incorporava ancora la vita in soggetti religiosi, ma qui isolava la sua attenzione su frutta e uccelli familiari ai giardini romani. Gli spettatori eruditi avrebbero associato la sua scelta di soggetto con un episodio in Plinio la Storia Naturale del Vecchio, in cui il pittore greco Zeuxis raffigurava uva così convincentemente che gli uccelli scesero a colpirli.
