Il soggetto – un Valentin trattato anche in un'opera di visione in questa mostra – è Cristo che scaccia dal Tempio di Gerusalemme i mercanti il cui commercio profanava il luogo sacro ("La mia casa sarà chiamata casa di preghiera; ma voi l'avete fatta una tana di ladri" [Matteo 21:13]). La figura il cui fondo nudo stabilisce il piano di primo piano in termini fisici, tattili deve aver colpito Valentin tanto quanto la qualità del movimento dinamico. Manfredi era uno dei seguaci più ammirati di Caravaggio e questa celebre immagine apparteneva al cardinale Fabrizio Verospi, che possedeva altri dipinti Caravaggeschi.
