Il soggetto del dipinto è tratto dal libro apocrifo di Tobit, che racconta come l'arcangelo Raffaello ha diretto Tobias per curare la cecità del padre con la galla del pesce che aveva catturato. Anche se nacque a Genova, nel 1630 Bernardo Strozzi si trasferì a Venezia, dove questa tela fu dipinta. Ha ripetuto la composizione almeno due volte, suggerendo che ha avuto un certo successo. Il lavoro di Strozzi è caratterizzato da un caratteristico pennello vibrante e da un’attenzione ai dettagli della vita.
