Degas andò regolarmente al teatro dell'opera di Parigi, non solo come membro del pubblico, ma come retroscena del visitatore e nello studio di danza, dove introdusse un amico che suonava nell'orchestra. A quel tempo, l'opera era ancora ospitata in rue Le Peletier e non si era ancora spostata nell'edificio progettato da Garnier che presto lo rimpiazzò. Dal 1870 fino alla sua morte, i soggetti preferiti di Degas erano ballerine al lavoro, nella prova o a riposo, e instancabilmente esplorato il tema con molte variazioni nella postura e nel gesto.
