La firma dice che la scena è di Ärentuna, a nord di Uppsala, dove Liljefors rimase in un cottage nell'inverno 1883-84. C'erano molti black grouse quell'anno nei campi bagnati, e il goshawk – comune in quei giorni – aveva un sacco di prede. Liljefors ha sparato a un giovane falco e lo ha usato come modello, insieme a grouse. Li ha montati nella foresta e ha dipinto tutto all'aperto. La vernice grigia-bianca applicata sottilemente con una spazzola a metà asciuga completa l'impressione di inverno freddo e la neve oscillante come il falco colpisce.
